Solar Flares at Millimeter Wavelengths. Caption, Credits and Copyright

The examples presented illustrate contrasting types of behavior exhibited by solar flares as detected at millimeter wavelengths. Both sets of observations were obtained with the BIMA array in June 1989.

The intensity of emission is plotted on the vertical axis; the horizonal axis denotes the elapse of time through the flare event. On the left, a short, sharp burst of activity was recorded. In contrast the emission profile of the flare on the right covered a longer period (about 10 minutes) and showed a more complex pattern of decay.
