Galactic Center: Caption and Credits
The data was obtained with observations of spectral line emission from
ionized hydrogen (H) from the inner 10 light-years of the galaxy using
the Very Large Array.
This gas, which has been heated to 10,000 degrees Kelvin by
cluster of hot stars in the center of the galaxy, exhibits complex
motion. The 3-D rendering of the datacube allows the researchers to
dissect different kinematic components and help determine whether gas
is rotating around the center, or actually falling inward.
