This image shows the Sun in radiation from gas in its transition layer between the chromosphere and the corona, where temperatures are about 100,000 K. Gases in this transition layer shine in the ultraviolet and extreme ultraviolet wavelengths. This observation was made on May 30, 1973, using the Skylab ATM extreme ultraviolet monitor.
