X-Ray Image of the Sun. Caption, Credits and Copyright
Hot coronal gas is revealed in this X-ray view of the Sun; the bright white areas are where the corona
is concentrated into the loops of magnetic field between sunspots. The dark gap running length-wise
down the center of the image is a coronal hole, where the Sun's surface magnetism extends straight out,
allowing hot gas to constantly stream away.
Image obtained with Skylab ATM X-ray telescope (June 19973).
