While the BIMA array is currently noted for its diverse spectroscopic capabilities, future upgrades will further enhance its observational abilities:

It has a highly flexible spectrometer which enables observation of many different molecules at once.
It is pioneering special computing techniques that promise to increase the speed and accuracy of data collection, imaging and analysis.
It will acquire additional dishes that will enhance its ability to detect farther, smaller, and fainter objects.
