Later in the '80s, more powerful computers with larger memories such as the Convex C-3880 enabled cosmologist Edmund Bertschinger of the Massachusetts Institute of Technology to undertake simulations capable of tracking millions of particles in three dimensions.
Greater accuracy and resolution resulted from incorporating particle-particle interactions into the particle-mesh algorithm. The hybrid or so-called "P3M" algorithms permitted the first true multiscale simulation to be undertaken at high resolution.
