Technical Considerations:Macintosh Platform
We recommend that you view this exhibit with the latest of any
of the currently available browsers. In particular, make sure you are
using NCSA Mosaic 2.01 (final release), Netscape 1.12 or Spyglass Mosaic
2.0, or later versions of
any one of these browsers. Older versions will NOT display all the
multimedia information inside this exhibit. Another point to note is
many of the pages are
Netscape optimized, so that they may appear slightly different from how
they were intended with other browsers. If
you are currently
using an older version of any of these browsers, use the links below to
download the most current versions:
Besides the browser, you will need the following external applications in order
to experience fully the multimedia features of the exhibit. Note there
are many other programs available to accomplish the same task just as well.
- Movies:
Development of software to facilitate easier viewing of MPEG and
QuickTime movies over the web is in constant flux. Currently, technology
that allows "realtime" streaming of video directly to web pages, thus
eliminating the
need for external players, is available in QuickTime format for some of the
Expo movies. To view them, you need the Apple/Netscape plug-in
for Netscape 3.0 betas listed below. In current development for MPEG
streaming is Vosaic, which will allow audio and video streaming for
MPEG movies, AS WELL as providing hyperlinking within movies. There
are also some proprietary new formats which support some level of
streaming, however, are not worth considering in the mainstream.
Fast
Player - for viewing QuickTime movies you download
Sparkle
- for viewing MPEG movies you download
Apple/Netscape
Plug-in - streamed QuickTime for Netscape 3.0
MovieStar
Plug-in -
allows viewing of streamed Quicktime movies in Netscape 2.0 and older
For use with the Macintosh, there is a tool available which
modifies
QuickTime movies appropriately for use with the streaming plugins. It is
very easy to use, just open and save. Then upload the movies up to your
server.
- Sounds:
Sound
App - plays all sound formats
Note: With new Atlas Navigator products, the LiveAudio Plug-in alleviates
the need for any external sound player.
Note: for Mosaic, the default setting plays audio files internally (no
interface). If you wish to change this, use SoundApp as above and
configure Mosaic through Preferences in the Options menu.
- Graphics/Other:
JPEG
View - for viewing external GIF and JPEG images
Configuring your browser to make use of SoundApp (for example):
- Find your configuration window wherever preferences are accessible
- Find section that deals with helper applications or mime-types
- Enter 'audio/x-aiff' to make use of AIFF sound files
- Click on it and press the 'Browse' button
- Locate your copy of SoundApp and then close the preferences window
Note: if you are using Netscape, the first time you attempt to
download an AIFF or unknown file, Netscape will prompt you for which helper
you wish to use. Simply locate and select SoundApp.
