Neutron Collision Graphic: Caption and Credits
Axisymmetric Collision of Two Neutron
Stars.
In 1986, Charles Evans, now at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, built a computer
code to model axisymmetric stellar systems on the CRAY X-MP at NCSA. This code was designed
as a tool to study the production of gravitational radiation during the collapse of nonspherical stellar
cores (associated with supernovae) and collisions between neutron stars.
The figures show the density distribution prior to the collision. The colors mark contours of equal density.
